There’s something magical about the quiet mornings at Browns Bay, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the salty breeze of the island. This hidden gem on the coast offers more than just a scenic view; it’s a place where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary. As you sip your cup of locally roasted coffee at a seaside cafĂ©, the distant spout of a humpback whale breaking the surface of the water reminds you of nature’s untamed beauty. It’s a rare intersection of human comfort and wild wonder, a moment that feels both personal and vast.

Here is my video of Humpback whales while having my morning coffee while staying at Browns Bay Resort. Enjoy.

Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)

Physical Characteristics

  • Size and Weight: Humpback whales can grow up to 60 feet (18 meters) in length and weigh as much as 40 tons (36,000 kg).
  • Coloration: They typically have a black or dark gray back with varying amounts of white on their underside and flippers.
  • Flippers: Their distinctive long pectoral fins, which can be up to one-third of their body length, are often white.
  • Tail: The tail fluke has unique patterns of white and black, which researchers use to identify individual whales.
  • Head: Their heads have knob-like protuberances called tubercles, each containing a single hair follicle.

Behavior

  • Breaching: Humpbacks are known for their acrobatic breaching, where they leap out of the water and splash down.
  • Songs: Male humpbacks are famous for their complex songs, which can last for hours and be heard over great distances. These songs are thought to play a role in mating.
  • Migration: They undertake long migrations, traveling thousands of miles between feeding grounds in polar waters and breeding grounds in tropical or subtropical waters.
  • Feeding: Humpbacks are filter feeders and use a technique called bubble-net feeding to catch krill and small fish. They create a ring of bubbles to herd their prey into a tight ball before lunging upward with their mouths open.

Habitat and Distribution

  • Range: Humpbacks are found in oceans worldwide, with distinct populations in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and Southern Hemisphere.
  • Breeding and Feeding Grounds: They spend summers feeding in cold, nutrient-rich waters and migrate to warmer waters for breeding and calving during the winter.
