Approaching Blind Channel Resort: A Favorite Stop in the Discovery Islands
Here is a short video of our approach to Blind Channel Resort from the west aboard our Bayliner 4788 pilothouse motoryacht, cruising eastbound through the sheltered and scenic waters of Cordero Channel in the outer Discovery Islands. The resort entrance lies just one nautical mile off the channel on the east side of West Thurlow Island.
We recently approached Blind Channel Resort from the west aboard our Bayliner 4788 pilothouse motoryacht, enjoying a relaxed cruise eastbound through the sheltered and scenic waters of Cordero Channel. This protected passage lies in the outer Discovery Islands, just north of Desolation Sound, and offers calm conditions ideal for coastal cruising. The resort entrance is conveniently located only one nautical mile off the main channel, on the east side of remote West Thurlow Island.
The narrow, tree-lined entrance known as Mayne Passage—historically referred to as Blind Channel—can be surprisingly easy to miss on charts, blending seamlessly into the dense old-growth rainforest shoreline. To avoid overshooting, we slowed down well in advance and maintained a sharp lookout until the docks and resort buildings came clearly into view ahead.
Although currents in nearby passages sometimes create eddies or whirlpools, the direct approach into Mayne Passage itself remains generally calm and straightforward, especially with good visibility and sensible timing relative to tidal flows.
As soon as we turned into the passage, we reduced speed to no-wake to prevent disturbing the boats already moored at the docks. We then monitored VHF channel 66A and hailed the marina staff to request a slip assignment. The professional and welcoming dock attendants responded promptly, providing clear instructions and often meeting us at the assigned berth to assist with lines while advising on the perpendicular current that runs across the moorage area.
Our Bayliner 4788 handled the calm waters and precise maneuvering effortlessly, allowing us to secure alongside the sturdy, well-maintained docks without issue.
Blind Channel Resort stands as the sole establishment on remote West Thurlow Island and has been a cherished multi-generational family-owned operation under the Richter family since 1970. What began as a modest outpost has evolved into a premier full-service wilderness marina and resort, widely celebrated for its exceptional hospitality, outstanding customer service, delicious dining, and thoughtful integration with the surrounding pristine coastal rainforest environment.
The marina offers widely spaced finger docks, 15/30/50 amp power available around the clock, clear UV-treated spring water, a full-service fuel dock with diesel and gasoline, and a well-stocked general store carrying groceries, marine charts, gifts, ice, liquor, and even postal services. Clean laundry and shower facilities provide additional practical convenience for visiting cruisers.
On shore, the acclaimed Cedar Post Restaurant and gallery enjoys a beautiful overlook of the marina, serving fresh local seafood, German-inspired classics, house-made desserts, and a selection of quality wines in a cozy waterfront setting that consistently earns high praise from guests.
Private oceanfront cabins and cottages provide comfortable, self-contained accommodations with full kitchens, making them ideal for longer stays, family groups, or special occasions such as retreats and weddings. Tranquil hiking trails wind through ancient rainforest, with one popular route leading to a massive 800-year-old giant cedar. Opportunities for kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, and guided wilderness tours abound, offering excellent chances to observe whales, grizzly bears, bald eagles, sea lions, and other coastal marine life. Unique artwork crafted from found beach objects adds a distinctive creative touch throughout the property.
Accessible only by boat or seaplane, with WiFi available on site and limited cell service, this peaceful haven delivers a true sense of escape on British Columbia’s wild and beautiful coast. It also serves as an ideal layover destination when transiting nearby tidal rapids such as Greene Point, Whirlpool, or Yuculta.
Always check tides and currents carefully when planning entry or departure, as passages in the region can experience strong flows. We strongly recommend making advance reservations for moorage, dining, and any accommodations during the busy summer months. Blind Channel Resort remains a reliable, enchanting, and perennial favorite among cruisers exploring the Discovery Islands.
