Video

Tucked away in the rugged beauty of the Broughton Archipelago, Mound Island Harbor offers a tranquil and safe anchorage for boaters seeking a peaceful retreat. We arrived at this serene harbor and were immediately struck by its calm waters and natural beauty.

A Safe Haven in the Broughtons

Mound Island Harbor is a true sanctuary for those looking to escape the more crowded anchorages of the Broughtons. The harbor’s location, nestled between islands and sheltered from the prevailing winds, provides excellent protection from the elements. The waters here are so calm that they mirror the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for a restful night’s sleep aboard. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to cruising, you’ll appreciate the peace of mind that comes with anchoring in such a secure and protected spot.

A Walk on the Midden Beach

Once securely anchored, we beached our dinghy on a nearby midden beach—a place where ancient indigenous people once lived and thrived, leaving behind layers of shells that have built up over centuries. The beach is not only a testament to the rich cultural history of the area but also a perfect spot for a leisurely walk.

As we strolled along the beach, the soft crunch of shells beneath our feet and the gentle lapping of waves provided a soothing soundtrack. The landscape is a mix of lush greenery and weathered driftwood, creating a picturesque setting for a relaxing walk. The beach is also a great place to stretch your legs after a day on the water, with plenty of opportunities to explore the shoreline and take in the unspoiled beauty of this remote corner of the world.

Solitude at Mound Island

One of the most remarkable aspects of our stay at Mound Island Harbor was the complete solitude. We found ourselves alone in this tranquil harbor, with no other boats in sight. The sense of peace and isolation added to the magic of the place, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty and serenity that surrounded us.

Final Thoughts

Mound Island Harbor is more than just a safe anchorage; it’s a place where you can slow down, immerse yourself in nature, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life on the water. Whether you’re drawn by the security of its calm waters, the beauty of its midden beach, or the chance to experience true solitude, Mound Island is a destination that will leave a lasting impression.

If you’re cruising through the Broughtons, make sure to set aside time to visit Mound Island Harbor. It’s a hidden gem that offers both safety and serenity, the perfect combination for any boating adventure.

Docking at one of Nanaimo’s well-equipped marinas, such as the Nanaimo Port Authority or the Stones Marina & Boatyard, provides immediate access to the city’s charming downtown. Here, you can enjoy a blend of historic and contemporary attractions. Walk along the Harbourfront Walkway, a scenic waterfront path, and indulge in fresh seafood at local restaurants offering panoramic ocean views.

A good place to provision with a grocery store walking distance from the dock.

When visiting the area we saw more crack pipes, and heroin needles on the sidewalk than another other place we have travelled by boat.

Pirates Cove, a hidden gem located on De Courcy Island in the stunning Gulf Islands of British Columbia, offers boaters an unparalleled marine oasis steeped in natural beauty and nautical charm. Known for its alluring name and intriguing history linked to the famous Brother XII cult, Pirates Cove is more than just a safe harbor; it’s a destination that captures the spirit of coastal exploration.

The well-protected cove provides an ideal anchorage, with ample space for vessels of various sizes. The holding ground in the cove is generally good, and visiting boaters can take advantage of the mooring buoys and dinghy docks available. It’s advised to arrive early during peak season, as this popular spot can fill up quickly.

It can be challenging to enter or leave if the tides are too low, so be sure to check your tide charts.

Pirates Cove Marine Provincial Park encompasses the area and is meticulously maintained, featuring walking trails that wind through lush forests and along rocky shorelines. It offers a perfect opportunity for boaters to stretch their legs and explore the island’s diverse flora and fauna.

For those interested in the area’s unique history, a visit to the interpretive signs scattered around the park offers insights into the local legends and lore that have shaped Pirates Cove.

Amenities for boaters include picnic areas, pit toilets, and fresh water during the summer months. Though services are limited, the raw and unspoiled beauty of the cove more than compensates, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a tranquil marine environment.

The starlit nights in Pirates Cove are particularly enchanting, with the gentle lapping of the water and the distant call of marine birds adding to the magical atmosphere. It’s a perfect setting for a peaceful evening aboard, sharing stories, and enjoying the fresh sea air.

Pirates Cove is not just a destination but a nautical adventure, offering boaters a blend of natural wonder, historical intrigue, and maritime delight. Whether you’re seeking a scenic anchorage, fruitful fishing grounds, or simply a moment of peace amid the Gulf Islands’ splendor, Pirates Cove welcomes you with open arms and the promise of an unforgettable experience.

Refuge Cove, located in British Columbia, Canada, is a small, picturesque community known for its serene and unspoiled natural beauty. It’s situated in the heart of the Desolation Sound, a popular destination for boaters and nature enthusiasts due to its sheltered waters and stunning scenery.

The cove itself is characterized by its rugged coastline, surrounded by dense forests that are typical of the Pacific Northwest. The waters are crystal clear and calm, making it an ideal spot for kayaking, sailing, and fishing. The area is also known for its rich marine life, including dolphins, seals, and occasionally whales, which can be spotted from the shore or while on the water.

The community in Refuge Cove is small but vibrant, primarily catering to seasonal visitors and boaters. The local store is a central feature, providing not just supplies and groceries, but also serving as a social hub for locals and visitors alike. Here, one can find everything from basic necessities to unique local arts and crafts.

Refuge Cove also offers essential services for boaters, including a gas dock and mooring facilities. These amenities make it a convenient and popular stopover for those exploring the surrounding waters of Desolation Sound.

There’s a charming restaurant that offers a taste of local cuisine, often featuring fresh seafood. Dining here provides not just a culinary delight but also offers beautiful views of the cove and its tranquil surroundings. We were quite impressed with the oyster po boy’s.

Overall, Refuge Cove is a fun place to stay for a night or two, offering a peaceful escape and a chance to immerse oneself in the stunning natural beauty of Canada’s west coast. However there isn’t much there to explore beyond the docks as the resort is surrounded by private property.
